Today while driving on my way to the office. I came across a billboard featuring a two wheeler brand. It had Amitabh standing beside a two wheeler, wearing a suit with hands in his pockets. Having worked in advertising I have fair bit of understanding about celebrity endorsement. A suit wearing Amitabh, might be a misfit in the ad. It is a long debate and I might not like to discuss that. But I would like to appreciate Amitabh as he managed to stay relevant across generations. When people half of his age aren’t getting good roles or have lost their sheen or work, he is here and working hard and minting money.
At the age of 80, he is seen everywhere and has redefined himself by taking interesting character roles. This is the learning we can take from him; we should strive to stay relevant by redefining our own role from time to time. When I started #HeartyMart 18 years back, I was heavily involved in operational work for few months. But I realised soon that my value contribution, as a counter sales manager or an inventory manager wasn’t helping my store. The point here I am making is that in our own setup we need to reflect upon our role as an #entrepreneur. Are we adding any value to our venture by assuming a correct role that suits our strength or should we hire a smarter professional to deliver that, and assign a new role for ourselves?
During my struggling days, I took to teaching by becoming a visiting faculty. Here, I got an opportunity to mentor young minds. And I found my ‘relevance’. I took this learning to my setup and started mentoring senior leaders. I guided them with right vision, idea and approach and helped them in developing strategic thinking. Much essential for the top management.
As a mentor, I started reading biographies of likes of Jack Welch, Jonny Ive, Steve Jobs, Lee iacocca and others. Their business life inspired my vision, guided my thought process which I passed it on to my team. I keep on doing this in my setup now. I managed to find a job, that might help me stay relevant for a long time. Always reflect upon this when you are at your work place. Take a role, reflect, redefine and stay relevant. You will enjoy your entrepreneurial journey when you do so!
