Mentoring has nothing do with sharing of one’s gyan or make the mentee feel intimidated by one’s presence. It is an art to uncover hidden strengths of the mentee and make him realise his worth.
I was told by a CEO of an incubation centre that most of the #startups lose motivation after such sessions and they avoid talking to mentors. This happens because the sessions are mentor driven, where he/she is working more to impress the #startup rather than helping it!
A good #mentor is someone who has gone through the grind, can understand and relate with the issues a #startup is facing. And is empathetic in his approach while dealing with them, rather than taking an elevated position.
I am currently associated with young school student’s, working on an assignment for a #startup competition. I have given them freedom to think and work on ideas they feel excited about and have ability to execute it.
As a #mentor to them, I pen down my thoughts parallelly with an idea to share it with them after discussing their ideas. I had two such meetings with them, and I feel happy that I end up tearing that page. They think beyond and more!
#Mentorship is all about being a good listener, sharing right tip and hand-holding the young #startup till the time a mentor think he can help. And let him go once a point is reached where the mentor cannot add further value to his mentee!
A successful coach in sports might not be a good player himself during his playing days, but he knows the game well, same holds true with a business mentor, he might not be a great #entrepreneur himself and might have failed, but in the process he learns the art of mentoring!
